"I must grasp life at its depth... I... wrestle with nature long enough for her to tell me her secret." VanGogh
The Art of Seeing
The surfaces of things can be beautiful; but, they cannot be surprising or enlightening, mysterious or profound. The greatest joy of a person, place, or thing is in diving past the crashing qualia of experience and plumbing its depths. Compared to literature and film, the plastic arts tend to be the most reluctant to reveal their inner voice, but this shyness can often be overcome with an attentive eye and an ear to the artist's life and writing. This attentiveness and care is the Art of Seeing, and it rewards the seeker of truth in all the arts and in life. The painting and writings gathered here are a good start.
